The Gist:
Violet Ambrose is grappling with two major issues: Jay Heaton and her morbid secret ability. But now that a serial killer is terrorizing her small town, and the echoes of the local girls he's claimed haunt her daily, Violet realizes she might be the only person who can stop him.
Despite his fierce protectiveness over her, Jay reluctantly agrees to help Violet find the murderer—and Violet is unnerved by her hope that Jay's intentions are much more than friendly. But even as she's falling intensely in love, Violet is getting closer and closer to discovering a killer . . . and becoming his prey herself.
Ashley's Take:
This book caused me to have a lot of different feelings, good and bad. I was really considering quitting this book multiple times the first half. I set it down for weeks after the initial 70 pages and honestly surprised I picked it back up. After seeing such great 5 star reviews from my GR friends, I really thought I had a winner. I even had it on my wish list forever.
It was definitely not "winning" for me. All I wanted to do in the first half was throw it or scream at the main character Violet nearly every chapter. It seemed she would continue to make poor decisions over and over again. Just as things were blown over from her past error she would screw something up again. That alone was very frustrating, along with her whininess made me think this was gonna be a 1 star terrible book.
Luckily her decision making got better, but really the story gave her less wiggle room to make the annoying decisions later in the story thank the goddess! The love story in the book was really sweet at times and reminded me of of first love in high school and how sweet boys really can be if they want to be. Is the love interest a swoon worthy guy? He is very much at times. The only problem is he seemed to always show up to save the day and that is just so cliche and been done repeatedly. The story just was not very original, obviously the gift Violet has is - the story surrounding it is not.
That being said, I think I would have absolutely hated this book had the romance not kicked in. I can tell which of my GR friends will LOVE this book and which will want to stay clear of it. Fallen and Hush Hush lovers this book is for you. Kate specifically stay away!
